Welcome Back to Campus from ITS

My name is Jenn Haas and I am Macalester’s CIO and AVP for Information Technology Services. I just wrapped up my first year at Macalester and I am both delighted to be here and to welcome you back to campus. 2018-2019 was a great year for ITS and we look forward to introducing you to continued technology enhancements. Check out what we’ve done and what to expect from ITS as you start this next academic year.

What’s New: Techy things from 2018-2019

Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus available to all

Want Microsoft Office? ITS has long wanted to provide easy, affordable access to Microsoft Office for students, faculty, and staff but did not have the necessary technology to support this initiative. In January 2019, with all the technology pieces in place, ITS was pleased to announce that the campus community could download Office 365 ProPlus at no cost on their personal computer. Websites for faculty and students

Want a website to for your class, or to showcase your scholarship and learning? Macalester sponsors website hosting for faculty and students to create projects, share their scholarship and teaching, and for e-portfolios. We can help you find the best option for your website from a variety of choices, including Google Sites, WordPress.org and third-party hosting provided by ITS. Work with the Digital Resource Center to create websites with static and/or dynamic content as well as vanity URLs. When you leave the college, these sites are now available to take with you to your future endeavors. Contact the DRC at digitalresourcecenter@macalester.edu and read: Third-Party Website Hosting Policy

Enhanced Services in the Digital Resource Center

Need help creating your own video or audio project? The Digital Resource Center (DRC) located at Neill Hall 115 has the resources and know-how to help! Checkout a camera or video camera, along with audio recorders and microphones—and we’ll walk you through how to use them. Adobe Creative Cloud is now available on every computer in the DRC. Two editing suites are equipped with Yeticaster podcasting microphones for easy, high-quality audio recording. DRC student assistants are available to help you get started using media software and equipment. Contact the DRC at digitalresourcecenter@macalester.edu

VPN for all on any device

Want to connect to the Macalester network from off campus? Using GlobalProtect VPN software to securely connect your laptop, smartphone or tablet to Macalester’s network when you are not on campus. Requesting a VPN account is no longer necessary. To keep our network secure, VPN logins will require Duo Mobile, a multifactor authentication tool. VPN & Duo Mobile Setup Guide (gdoc)

Want to stream more stuff? Stream live TV from on campus and thousands of Xfinity On Demand shows and movies directly to your laptop, desktop and mobile devices. Additionally, you can use your Macalester credentials to log into over 90 TV Everywhere apps when off-campus. xfinityoncampus.com

Student accounts available 1+ year after graduation

Want to keep your Macalester email account a little longer? Starting this year, graduated seniors can keep their Macalester email accounts and access to 1600grand until October 1 of the year after they graduate. (e.g. December 2019 and May 2020 graduates keep their accounts until October 1, 2021). This extension will give them ample time to wrap up any projects with Macalester collaborators and download tax documents from 1600grand. Graduates Techlist

Internet Bandwidth & WiFi

How’s your wireless access? ITS added wireless coverage and availability by replacing over 150 wireless access points in various residence halls, including Bigelow, Doty, Grand Cambridge Apartments, Turck and Wallace. Outdoor wireless coverage was expanded on Shaw Field, the North Lawn, Kagin Plaza and Marvin Plaza. Macalester’s server infrastructure was migrated to new data-center hardware that will run servers for the next few years. Internet bandwidth was increased from 2+ Gbps to 3+ Gbps by adding a third dedicated internet service provider.
