Faculty: Change To Assignment Grading In Moodle

This week the AIAs have received several reports of faculty experiencing technical issues while grading assignments within Moodle. As a result, ITS is disabling Moodle’s document conversion engine, a feature used while grading student assignments.

What happened: When faculty attempt to grade using the online assignment grading interface, Moodle freezes, thereby halting future work. Additionally, faculty can’t view some student submissions by using the preview and annotation pane of the assignment grading interface.

Why did this happen: ITS is working to identify and resolve the root cause of the issue. Moodle’s document conversion engine will be disabled until ITS can resolve that cause.

What this means for you: When grading assignments in Moodle, student work submitted as online text, Word documents, or any other non-PDF format will not be visible in the online assignment grading interface. The left side of the interface will be blank (pictured below). You can download student assignments and can view online text in the right side of the assignment grading interface. PDF submissions will appear in the left side of the assignment grading interface.

If you get locked out of Moodle or have difficulty grading, please don’t hesitate to contact your AIA for assistance.
