World-Wide computer chip flaw potentially affects personal and College-owned devices

Two recently-discovered computer chip flaws, Meltdown and Spectre, have been
getting a lot of press recently. Flaws in the design and manufacture of nearly all
microprocessor chips are potentially vulnerable to sophisticated attacks.
Essentially, almost every computer, server and smartphone in use could be affected.

Services affected: Nearly every computer, server and smartphone in use
could be affected.

What is being done:  ITS has installed security patches for servers, pushed out
an update for macOS 10.13.2, and will continue to install updates as they become

What you need to do: Check for and install updates frequently on all your
devices to ensure that they receive patches for this and other vulnerabilities as
they are released. Macalester ITS is actively monitoring and patching servers
and operating systems as updates become available.
