Google Apps

Updates to core Google Apps and the major services like Google+. Also major updates that may affect the Macalester community.

Proper folder structure, naming conventions, color coding, and keeping track of what is shared with you can go a long way when used properly.

Coming soon to Macalester: the newly released Google Photos folder in Google Drive pulls in all your Google+ photos immediately after they are posted.

Google will continue to provide regular updates and security patches to Chrome on Windows XP through the end of 2015.

Google is boosting the ranking of mobile-friendly pages on mobile search results.

To help mobile searchers understand your website better when we show it in the mobile search results, today we’re updating the algorithms that display URLs in the search results to better reflect the names of websites, using the real-world name of the site instead of the domain name, and the URL structure of the sites in a breadcrumbs-like format.

Month view provides a high level view of all scheduled events for a full month, allowing people to then tap on a specific day for a closer look.

A new version of the Google Drive Android app is coming to Google Play over the next week. Loads of new features.

New versions of the Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides apps for Android are now available on Google Play and a new version of the Docs app for iOS is available in the App Store.

Just pull down on any page to reload, open, or close tabs with one swipe. Pull straight down to reload, pull down and left to open a new tab, or pull down and right to close a tab. You can now use your favorite password manager (1Password, Lastpass and more) to fill out website password fields in a snap.

The good news is that the Federal Communications Commission created a new “Citizens Broadband Radio Service,” that makes some frequencies available for shared wireless broadband use in the 3.5 GHz spectrum band.  

On Wednesday, Google unveiled its long-awaited phone service, called Project Fi, putting the search giant in competition with Verizon, AT&T and other wireless service providers.
