Telephone Problems Resolved

Resolution Update, 1:00 PM: It appears that all of our incoming and outgoing telephone calling problems have been fixed.  If you experience any telephone difficulties, please call or email Kelly Borke (borke@macalester.edu, 651-696-6566).

Update, 10:50 AM: If people try to call your Macalester phone from off-campus, their call is not completed, and that is evident to the caller.  Callers are unable to leave voicemail for you, and that is clear to callers as well.  If you are expecting an important call during our current Macalester telephone problems, please reach out to your contact another way.  Rest assured, people trying to call you will realize there is a problem and should try again until they reach you.

Original message, 10:00 AM: Currently Macalester telephones can only make and receive calls on campus. These phones cannot dial off-campus numbers, locally or long-distance, nor can we receive off-campus calls on Macalester phones. We are actively working with the vendor to correct these problems as quickly as possible.

Thank you for your patience.  We will send more information when the issue is resolved.

Protect Your Laptop!

Losing a laptop at any time is a painful experience.  Never leave yours visible and unattended even “for just a minute.”  Backup everything you don’t want to lose or recreate (e.g., to a CD/DVD or external hard drive) – because losing a laptop can take all of the fun out of a term.

If you do lose it, your chances of recovery are much better if you can readily provide law enforcement with identifying information (e.g., make, model, serial number).  Use the Google Docs tool My Inventory at Macalester to record and immediately access this information, anytime, anyplace.

Also, consider installing laptop tracking software such as Prey, available FREE at preyproject.com.

Finally, when in public places, secure your laptop with a cable lock (available on loan at the Library and Campus Center).

Macalester New Login Page has Sleeker Look

On Wednesday, January 9, 2013 Macalester's Google Apps login page is changing. Here is the sneak peek. Stay tuned for more information on accessing Google Apps.

2 New Ways to Access Macalester Email and Google Apps

On Wednesday, January 9, 2013, Macalester's Email and Google Apps login page is changing.

The new login page will:
  • Work better across all Google services.
  • Allow access to Macalester Email and Google Apps, even when Macalester's network is unavailable.
Starting on Wednesday morning, you may use two new ways to access your Macalester email: mail.google.com/a/macalester.edu and www.gmail.com.

New way #1: Go to mail.google.com/a/macalester.edu. Enter your Macalester username and password. Click Sign in.

New way #2: Go to www.gmail.com. Enter your full Macalester email address (username@macalester.edu) as Username. Enter your password. Click Sign in.

Connections to email via mobile devices remain unchanged. However, if you log into email using a mobile web browser, use one of the two new ways. Current links to access Google Apps will continue to work, too.

Replace any Google Apps bookmarks with: mail.google.com/a/macalester.edu. Read more about bookmark basics.

Contact the ITS Help Desk at helpdesk@macalester.edu or 651-696-6265 with any questions.
