Wireless Key Reminder

This is a gentle reminder that our wireless network is divided into segments dedicated for use by specific groups.  Faculty and staff use 'Macalester';  students use 'Macalester-Student', and visitors use 'Macalester-Guest'.  To access your wireless segment, you must enter a wireless 'key' one time.  These keys were e-mailed directly on August 7,  and again on August 28.  'Macalester-Guest' has no key.

Please do not share your key with others.  If you do, you may compromise the security and confidentiality of your data.  Please call the ITS Help Desk at 651-696-6525 if you have questions or need assistance.

Students, Register Your Computers—And Get Wireless!

Student-owned computers can access Macalester College's network after a simple one-time registration process.  Registration simply verifies that your anti-virus tools and operating system are fully up-to-date (if they are not, we can help). You can register your computer even if you're not yet on campus, at this link:

http://www.macalester.edu/register/

Returning students, your registration from last semester has been cleared, so you need to re-register your computer (but now you can do so before you get here!).

To connect to the wireless network (named 'Macalester-Student'), you will need to enter an electronic key into your computer one time. Please do not share this key with others: doing so could compromise the security of your files and personal information.  Rest assured that faculty, staff and guests already have their own dedicated wireless network segments.  The key has been emailed to all students, and we'll be happy to share it with you again when you get to Macalester.

Returning students, the key is the same one you used last year. You can register your computer before you arrive on campus; enter the wireless key after you get here.  If you have questions or problems,  either with registration or with the wireless key, please call the ITS Help Desk at 651-696-6525.

Network and Telephone Problems Resolved

The telephone and voicemail problems we reported earlier were caused by a larger network outage that occurred at about 4:00 PM this afternoon.  This outage interrupted network services in some areas of campus, primarily residence halls.  Network staff responded immediately and identified approximately 20 switches that needed to be restarted.  These reboots appear to have resolved the problems.  We will continue monitoring our network to prevent a recurrence.
